Large tech companies like Google and Facebook have significant power in the digital media landscapes of countries around the world, and it can sometimes be hard to imagine what online life would be like without them. This article I had the pleasure to be part of is a contribution from the participants on a panel organised by the Amsterdam-based AI, Media and Democracy Lab which discussed the question: What would happen if Facebook and Google left your country tomorrow? For one, the media industry would miss out on a significant chunk of funding for research, education, experience-exchange and innovation projects. But there’s more.
